Ten Cents a Dance Christine Fletcher Books
It is good to read a book in this time period as we take so much in this country for granted. You will meet many brave women who struggle and scrapeeveryday and sometimes grab at any straw to improve their lives with circumstances we can only imagine. The story takes place at the beginning of WWII and the hardships that we can only imagine are taken in stride by these brave women. I found this story well written and interesting from beginning to end. I would recommend it to anyone who loves reading about the WWII era and those who need to be inspired.

Ten Cents a Dance Christine Fletcher Books Reviews
I liked the characters and it focused on an aspect of the late 30's, 40's that I wasn't familiar with but was very interesting. Everyone had their own reasons and ways for trying to escape the back of the yards. I found Christine Fletcher to be a good fictional author.
I have to say when I read this book from the first chapter I felt like I was transported into Ruby's 1920 life. The slang that's used when she and her friends used and the social etiquette, ie. asking what parish one is from before concidering a dance, was not what I expected but, I liked it!
Ms.Fletcher paints a grand and vivid story for her readers that will pull you in and takes a couple of turns I didn't expect, but in a good way.You can see that she did a great deal of research/ already had a great deal of knowledge of this era. The ending though, was a little bit of a let down. I felt it was like she tied a nice bow on the story to make it perfect by the end...I feel there could have been a better ending to Ruby's fast paced life in after taxi dancing. One of the most interesting finds in this story though, is the authors note about what inspired her to write this book.
Kudos to Christine Fletcher for a great story!
This novel wasn't really what I was expecting but it was so good. It's a unique story that I recommend.
Yes, there were dance halls and yes, some of the girls were fast but not all of them. Some of them just had to play the game to survive. They lived in that time frame when life was really tough, money was tight and you were taught morals and did your best and still you were labeled. What's a girl gonna do, ya know? Does she make it? It is worth the read.
This book was exactly what I'd been looking for. I wanted to read something entertaining but with depth, preferably about a strong young woman and that is what I got and more. I was transported into a different time era that felt authentic. It's 1941 and I'm right there with Ruby, in the dancehall, at the jazz clubs, beside her when she's lying to her mother.
I felt her need to be young, to have fun, to help her family and I admired her courage. Loved this book. Everything about it was pitch-perfect and I hope this author keeps writing!
I have to admit, I kept trying to figure out which of the male characters Ruby was going to end up with, because, you know, this was a romance, right? But maybe that's the point of the story. For much of the book, Ruby is looking for approval and love, but the men she's looking to are flawed. The most satisfying relationships she has are those in which she breaks with the expectations of tradition (and crosses racial lines). Don't get me wrong; I still love a good romantic story with a "perfect" hero. But I like the way Ruby's story ended, too--maybe even better, in some ways.
A real life situation, weather it's in 1944 or 2014, one parent families, trying to make ends meet, teenagers dropping out of school to start working to help support the family. The story covers unemployment, lying, drinking, teenage sex ,abuse, it doesn't matter what year it's in it effects every family differently. Finished this book in a few hours, couldn't put it down, a very good read.
