Nadia Moran narrates this action packed adventure of a girl raised by an Elven noble who is also an archmage. He has taught her many things not the least of which is magic that if anyone else (specifically in law enforcement) knew she knew it she would be executed without trial and he makes sure she knows that.
He has trained her to be his master thief; to take all the risks and gain very little in return. Very little, that would depend on how you value human life and more importantly a member of your family because her younger brother's life hangs in the balance. After their mother and father died of frostfever Russell was next, but the Elven lord wanted Nadia and her spark of magic to train into his master thief so he traded the yearly magic spells (for they would be many) to cure Russell for her willing services and that was about all Nadia got in return for her services.
Service to the cruel Morvilind was hard and thankless, but Nadia knew that part of it was to keep her as strong and clever as possible and maybe that's why her tasks got harder and harder. Now she was to steal from someone who was very rich and could afford the very best in home security. If that wasn't bad enough she soon learns that someone else is sneaking around the mansion during McCade's annual party, but then he's not a thief. There's enough hired security that she's cautious about entering a partnership with him; if she dies Russell dies and keeping Russell alive is all that matters to her... almost all.

Cloak Games Thief Trap Volume 1 Jonathan Moeller 9781515266037 Books Reviews

A wickedly fun, fast-paced, future-world creation complete with magic spells, horribly alien creatures and a kick-ass female protagonist. The author's story lady comes across as a male-centric fantasy of womanhood, yet I liked her. His attention to story detail and plot lines kept me reading. And I'm looking forward to the sequels. Good job, Moeller.
Cloak Games by Jonathan Moeller came across in a newsletter that said it would appeal to readers of Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden series. I tried it and an totally invested enough to try the next one in the series. I'm a little worried about Nadia the main character. So far I am not sure how believable it is that she continues to work under coercion but is doing very little to research magic or prepare more to take on her boss.
Action kept moving without too much constant repeating of known facts. The time line seemed a little off, so quit trying to subtract/add to figure why. The story was too good to harp about a few years give or take. Only complaint - it was wayyyy to short. At least it didn't leave it hanging in the middle of a "mission" - hate it when the author does that. Looking to read more from Moeller!!!
I enjoyed the first three books in the series and will definitely read the next when it comes out. While the main character is not always totally likeable, she is strong, smart, and inventive. the story is unique and her life and ways of getting out of tricky situations kept me interested (even if sometimes those ways involved a bit too much luck or fortuitous timing...). I recommend them to anyone looking for a high adventure story with a strong female character.
I have read all of Jonathan Moeller's Demonsouled books and really enjoyed them. He seems to be going with a shorter serial format now and it's not really for me. I like a complete 300-400 page book much better, even if in a trilogy or longer. This one is under 200. So about $6 for one of his longer books if these were compiled. Idk money? Just how the books write themselves?

If you like his books this fits well with his style just keep in mind the above noted format. I would add that these don't read like a complete story. I read Frost Fever too. The endings are not abrupt but not satisfying either. Obvious more to come style that I don't mind in a full length book but not so much in the short form.

*Read the Ghost books too. Recommended also.
I really liked the idea behind this world elves coming from another dimension and conquering Earth. There were some things I saw as inconsistencies that bothered me a bit. Foremost among these was that the novel was set 300+ years in the future, but the technology level remained exactly where it is today. This annoyed me, and I had to make a mental note to ignore any mention of time. The plot was a bit simple and standard. That said, the writing itself was fairly engaging and I read the book straight through. I am not inclined to purchase other books in the series, but I'm not sorry I spent time reading this one.
I give it 4.5 stars and I'm rounding up.

Take a cross of Caina from Moeller's Ghost series and Sienna from Robert J. Crane's Girl in the Box and you get something like Nadia - a character with a very sharp tongue and one who will stop at nothing to save those she loves, even if it means her own death. She's an admirable character with just enough flaws to make her real.

The story flows well and is pretty constantly entertaining. The reader gets a glimpse of several aspects of the Nadia's world, but the book is too short to totally flesh the world out. In fact, that's my main complaint that keeps it from being a true "I love it," 5-star kind of book - it's awfully short.

Nonetheless, I'll be looking forward to reading the next book(s) in this series.
