The Problem with Forever Harlequin Teen Jennifer L Armentrout Books

A story about hope, love, and survival, THE PROBLEM WITH FOREVER is another Armentrout masterpiece. This story is raw, and gritty. It's heartbreaking, and hopeful. In true Armentrout fashion, she doesn't shy away from the wide range of emotions that both characters and readers will feel reading Mallory's story.

Similar to that of Katie McGarry, Armentrout has this talent for bringing the gritty to life perfectly in her books. She doesn't shy away from the hard life that some of her characters live. She doesn't sugar coat what they endure at home, or on the streets, or any aspects of their life. I think part of that is what makes this story feel so real. She gives her readers real characters your heart breaks for, and you can't help but cheer on. She gives you characters you emotionally connect to, whether you have any similarities to them or not. These characters quickly become more than just people who are in the story. They become characters you care about.

I loved the way Armentrout allowed me to get to know Mallory, Rider, Jayden, Hector, and Ainsley. There's so much depth to each of them. It's hard not going into the specifics, but if I mention specifics, I'd be spoiling some of the story. These characters felt like real life characters. I really enjoyed getting to know them, and the roles they each play in this story. There's much more behind the shyness, and tough acts some these characters have.

I loved seeing Mallory over come her struggles to find her voice. I liked that Rider learns there's a difference between survival and surviving. I loved the elements of family, friendship, love, forgiveness, and hope that are apart of their story. Mallory and Rider's stories are at times heartbreaking. It might be hard for some to read what these two endure. What I admire about these two, is that while they might each be broken in their own way, they didn't allow the years of what they endured to break them. They are so much more than their past experiences. They are survivors, and fighters. They have hope, and that strength to not allow their pasts to define them or their futures. Their futures are theirs to own.

THE PROBLEM WITH FOREVER is a story that will leave it's mark on you. It's a gritty story with a realistic setting, raw emotions, and realistic characters. It's a story about HOPE and love. This is one of Armentrout's best YA books yet.

*This story does contain some language, abuse, and a sexual/sensual scene, that may not be suitable for younger readers.

The Problem with Forever Harlequin Teen Jennifer L Armentrout Books Reviews

In The Problem with Forever, Jen proves exactly why I consider her an “auto-buy” author. This book was pretty much made of feels and it wrecked me in the best possible way. It also put me back together when it was all said and done, so don’t think it’s bleak or anything. It’s a beautiful book with a hopeful message and I know I won’t forget these characters and how it all made me feel anytime soon. Mallory, Rider and the rest of the crew here latched on tight.

I’m not going to get down into the weeds with the plot lines in this book. I’d hate myself if I spoiled anything for you. As you’ve read in the synopsis, it all begins when Mallory starts attending a new school and Ridge, the person who saved her during some tough times in a foster home, is a student there. They reconnect, but it’s messy. He has a girlfriend and is struggling to be a better him. It’s easy to get sucked into a lifestyle he didn’t want to be part of. Mallory is fighting her own demons – mainly her nearly-constant fight to even speak. Her former foster family had beaten her down so badly that she has a tough time putting herself out there, but she wants to. Ridge is one person she can be herself with and, because he reenters her life, she begins to heal and grow a little. The same can be said for him thanks to her. I loved how these two leaned on each other and how things grew between them as they each tackled their demons – both past and present – and they discovered who they really were.

I can’t even pinpoint my favorite thing about this book. If I had to, it’s a toss up between the connection Mallory and Rider share and the growth each character undergoes over the course of the book. Both were so honest and real that I can’t stop thinking about it. (Mother of all book hangovers right here, as you might expect.) The Problem with Forever is a totally different kind of YA from Jen and it’s easily my new favorite. I love when I find really, really good YA contemporary and this one is definitely a new favorite.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.
