While I really liked Obsidian, Onyx is even better! The stakes are so much higher for Katy, Daemon and the other Luxen in the area. That bond that was forged between Katy and Daemon turns out to be so much more than either of them anticipated and it's a huge source of trouble for everybody. In the beginning it was just bizarre, little occurrences like Katy's locker opening on its own or a glass falling off of the counter. However, soon enough she learns that it's not just a lingering effect of Daemon healing her. She really is changed permanently. Then a new guy, Blake, shows up and knows all about what Katy is going through, but Daemon is immediately suspicious of him. I was, too! From there it is a non-stop, adrenaline pumping story!

In Onyx we learn a ton more about Luxen and the DOD. The world building is taken to another level, and I loved every moment of it. Quite a few of the Luxen abilities had already been revealed, but Katy discovers that there's more than just fancy light shows and super speed. The extent of these new abilities? I have no idea, but I suppose the sky's the limit! The DOD is also far more dangerous than I had imagined. There is certainly more to them than they've been letting on, and even within the department there are those who are less trustworthy than the others. Of course there are several surprises along the way, and they are definitely going to change everything for everyone.

The romance was even more wonderfully frustrating in Onyx! I did get a bit annoyed at the repetitiveness of it in the beginning with Katy blaming Daemon's attraction to her on their bond, but other than that, I was fully invested. I wanted to grab them both and lock them in a room together until they kiss and made up! There were a handful of steamy scenes, but I need more! I guess I'm use to the romance coming fully together in the first book, so taking this long is torture!

I am loving this series so far! I still can't believe it took me so long to finally start it. Anyone out there who's also been putting it off: STOP! Read this series immediately! It's full of action, romance, and plenty of angst! And there's a ton of little references that are sure to being a smile to any book blogger's face!

Onyx Lux Jennifer L Armentrout Books Reviews

I should have seen this coming. I should have seen this coming!! I’ve mentioned it before with Armentrout’s books how they’re very CW Network so really this shouldn’t have surprised me but alas…

Yes, a lot of people loved this book because a) it continues this cool world and b) Daemon isn’t such a jerk to Katy. Both are very valid reasons to love this book and I agree with them. What I have issue with is the endless drama. Some people love that type of thing but I just don’t happen to be one of those people. Just not my cup of tea.

If you enjoy a cool supernatural world with fast-paced books richly laced with romance then I honestly think you’d like this series because on that front they’re really really good. I personally hate too much romantic drama that straight up overtakes the plot and impulsive ill-equipped characters that don’t know when to quit so I will not be continuing this series but don’t let my frustrations stop you from giving it a try. There’s a huge fandom for these books so far be it from me to keep you from joining the joy.
The good the author uses better pacing in this second book. The first was uneven, with short action segments bridging interminably long relationship building. This one is more even. Lots of action. Lots of character development during the action. All that is good. The story's stakes have been raised dramatically, too, and the ending is explosive.

A minor character complaint Daemon is definitely not human. No human male could initiate the wild necking and petting sessions that he starts, and then stop of his own accord.... )

And now the bad. In the acknowledgments, the author thanked a whole bevy of people for "reading the book before it got to the person with the red pen." None of those people, INCLUDING the one with the red pen, did their job. I can tolerate a certain number of typos in books, and of course for some ungodly reason YA fiction seems to suffer even more than other books as editing and proofreading get outsourced (or skipped entirely). But this book was--according to the author--proofed and/or edited. And yet there are missing words, extra words, misspelled words, and even entire sentences that make no sense, There are tense changes in the middle of sentences. I was thrown entirely out of passages time after time as I said "huh? What does THAT mean?"

Just a few examples (all from the copy)

***"That will never happened again."
***Reaching for the heavy door, it opened... (the door reached for the door? Anybody say "dangling participle"?)
***What was wrong me?
***"She was giving him the first degree" (it's THIRD degree....)
***He was in need of hair cut...
***Confliction tore through me... (is the author trying to coin a word? The Oxford English Dictionary does not recognize the existence of this one.)
***She bumped me with her hp (does this mean HIP, or is she referring to a computer?)
***"I think she'd gotten it when we went shopping." (The speaker must be ESL...I could forgive a German for that, but not a Brit or American).
***Daemon must've of put...
***He dropped my arm. (Then, in the next paragraph, he drops her arm again.)
***Discomforted, I... (I think she means "discomfited." "Discomfort" is a noun.)

These are just a few of the booboos that spread like pollen all over the story, and it greatly interfered with my enjoyment of the book. Doubtless the kids will keep snapping up the book, because most of them don't care whether a book is written correctly or not, and they're so used to chatspeak and misspellings that a few more won't kill them--but really, a writer, especially one whose main character fancies herself a writer as well, should do better.

The story itself was good enough that I will take the chance and purchase the third book in the series. But if it has also not been proofread, I'll stop there--the hours are too few in the day to spend them wondering what a (supposedly) English-speaking author really means.
