If You Only Knew Kristan Higgins 9780373784974 Books
If You Only Knew by Kristan HigginsI absolutely loved this book. Happiness, heartbreak, confusion, anger, rejection, fear, joy and family love. All are a part of this story of two sisters and their lives for a brief time.
Jenny and Rachel go through some rough times and changes in their lives. They are each strong in their own way as they deal with love and hurt. The sisters have each other, but more than that, they learn to have confidence in themselves and make decisions that are best for them. I cried quite a bit in the last quarter of the book. It was rough and sweet and oh, so good.
Don't wait for your life to happen. Live it. Life isn't a bed of roses. It's complicated and often messy. But it can be happy.
I won this book in a Goodreads FirstReads contest.

I have enjoyed all of Kristan Higgins books and this one is no exception. While she usually writes HEA romance novels, this book is her first in women's fiction and she hit a home run with it. The story deals with everyday issues faced by many. I found myself emotionally invested in this book. (And really still am). Kristan takes you along for the ride as the sisters, Rachel and Jenny, work through some very difficult issues. Don't worry there is humor and wit in the book too. I found myself laughing throughout which helped with the heavy emotions I was feeling.
Maybe it was because I could unfortunately relate to what Rachel was going through, but I felt the emotions coming off the pages. Kristan does a great job portraying the aftermath of infidelity on a marriage. It isn't as black and white as most would believe.
Both sisters grow and change, standing up for themselves and ending up a stronger person. I loved the secondary characters as well, especially Leo. I would love a follow up to this book, just a glimpse of how everyone is doing.
I love Kristan Higgins books and this one did not disappoint. Let me start by saying that I read for fun. I want to be entertained. I am not nit picky about the depth of characters or details about the plot. I agree with some of the other reviewers that it started out slowly. But after the first few chapters it does pick up and I had difficulties putting it down. I stayed up late just to finish it. I found the characters to be likeable. That's important to me. The chapters alternate between the two sisters' point of views. I started out liking Jenny better than Rachel, but by the end, I grew to like Rachel, too. I follow the author on FB and the book sounds just like her! Higgins is quirky and funny and so was this book. Yes, there's a little bit of language, but it's not excessive by any means. I think it just makes it more realistic. Both sisters go through some personal growth and I was happy for them both in the end. I purchased this book months ago and I am sorry that it took me so long to find the time to read it.
I loved this book. As a long-time fan of Ms. Higgins, I believe this is, possibly, her best. As others have mentioned, this is about two sisters with alternating point of view every chapter or so. I did find this a little bothersome--to be pulled out of a story I enjoyed and forced into the other one--but, over all, I enjoyed that. My favorite character was Leo, a broken man and a very talented pianist, educated at Julliard. He stopped playing due to tragedy--how does one get over the death of a wife and their baby? He's incredibly sexy but says he's for recreational purposes only. Meanwhile, Jenny has fallen into the trap of being friends with her ex and his truly lovely new wife. Perhaps out of guilt, they'd drawn Jenny into their circle which isn't healthy for any of them. Little by little, Jenny pulls away, a great stride in her growth. Rachel has three of the most darling girls ever and a husband who seems devoted. When she finds out he's been cheating--because Rachel is a little exhausted taking care of triplets--her world falls apart. Although there is great depth in this novel, there is also humor and the descriptions of the little girls and Leo and his student are particularly endearing. The characters grew and changed and learned to trust. Their motivations and backstories are strong and make sense. I highly recommend this book.
I read On Second Thought by this author a couple of months ago, and I really liked it. I had no idea it was (lightly) connected to this book until I started reading. But sort of knowing in advance how things end up didn't diminish my enjoyment of this book.
The romance in this book is a distant second to the relationship between the sisters, Jenny and Rachel. As much as I liked Jenny, she was kind of a doormat. Her husband dumps her, then meets a new wife and has a baby within months, but he's determined to keep Jenny as a friend. Jenny is funny and kind, a good person. She meets Leo, and while I enjoyed their banter, Leo was a jerk a lot of the time. I liked them better as friends.
Rachel is a SAHM with three-year-old triplets who finds out her husband is having an affair. Rachel goes through a rollercoaster of emotions, and her story felt really believable. One minute she wants to stab her husband, the next she wants to save her family. She changes a lot through the course of the book, and I found myself really cheering her on.
There are lots of funny moments in this book, many provided by Jenny and Rachel's mother. I love a book that can make me tear up one minute, then laugh the next.
