Emma is a fallen siren, who had been tasked by the gods, with protecting Persephone, the daughter of Demeter. She failed in her role as protector and has since been banished to Earth to atone, by working for the FBI and finding missing people or finding justice for those lost. She has no idea how long she’ll have to wait to return home, but it’s been thousands of years now, and she may never go home, so she’s made her home in California working for the FBI.This is the second book in the series, and in this one Emma finds out that she is going to be working with Zack, the one man she loves, but can’t. Part of her punishment, includes the fact that she also can't love, or more importantly be loved in return. She has no idea what the god's might do, which means Zack is at risk. Even though Zack is a werewolf and plenty strong, she knows he's no match for a god. So she finds a spell to erase Zack’s memory of their affair. But Zack knows something is missing and can’t figure it out.
In the mean time they're working on a case involving the kidnapping of young girls. As they get closer to the truth, Emma finds out more than she wanted to know about the vampire she’s been seeing (but doesn’t love), which brings her closer to Zack, once again.
This series is a quick read in that you really don’t want to put it down. You want Zack to remember, but at the same time Kallisto, Emma’s vampire lover, seems to be just as sweet and caring, and he knows what she is and why she can’t love someone, so there are no secrets. Yet, little things start to happen that open Emma’s eyes to this relationship, and it’s an indication that this is not really the ideal situation she once thought. Not to mention Kallisto may have some involvement with the missing girls she's trying to find.
I really enjoy this series by writing team Jeanne C. Stein and Samantha Sommersby. I haven't read anything by Samantha Sommersby yet, but I'm a huge fan of the Anna Strong series by Jeanne C. Stein.
So if you enjoyed Stein’s Anna Strong series, you will like this one too. It's not as edgy, but just as good, however start with the prequel, Captured, and then read the first in the series called, Cursed.
If you're interested in checking out the Anna Strong series, and I definitely recommend it, start with The Becoming.

Reckoning A Fallen Siren Novel SJ Harper Books Reviews
I absolutely loved this book! I could not put it down! I got in bed to read and all of a sudden it was 2 AM and I had finished it!
Zack and Emma are both trying to move on from the events at the end of Cursed, though he doesn't actually remember what happened. She's been seeing the vampire king of the Southwest, Kallistos, who she met in the last book, but she's trying to keep it casual. He wants to make the relationship official, but it seems to be more out of a need for control than for love. I also got the feeling that he may still be in love with Emma's sister, though he hasn't seen her in centuries, and may be using Emma as a substitute. Zack is living with Sarah, the were from his old pack who followed him to San Diego. But neither partner is doing a very good job forgetting their feelings. Their time together is often tense as Zack tries to get Emma to talk about the connection they have and she tries desperately to avoid it.
As if things weren't awkward enough, they have to seek assistance from Kallistos and his team to investigate the disappearances. Emma suffers from some serious testosterone overload when the vampire king and the werewolf end up in the same room. I loved the scenes with the three of them trying to work together. It's also really interesting to see the difference in the way the two men treat Emma, especially at a particular pivotal moment.
To make matters worse, a rival vampire king and the alpha werewolf from Zack's old pack both show up in town. Politics start intruding on their ability to work the case, especially where the vampires are concerned. Emma starts to question her relationship with Kallistos when she sees where his priorities lie. Though honestly I was questioning from the beginning, just not for the same reasons that Zack was. The vampire plotline gets wrapped up nicely, but I felt like the weres were left hanging a little bit.
I've decided the best way to describe this series may be that it's a romance without the HEA. If you remember how Cursed ended, you'll understand. Without being too spoilery, all I can say is I don't know how many more of these endings I can take. It's heart-wrenching. But then I knew something was going to go wrong when Demeter got involved.
